DE MUSKETIERS
Before 1936 fencing in Curacao was practiced in a small circle. In 1936, a young Dutch officer, A.J.G. Boutmy, arrived in Curacao and created opportunities for the privileged classes to practice the sport. In 1950 he was instrumental in creating the first opportunity for local colored talent to take up the sport. Frustrated by the fact that circumstances at that time did not allow equal participation of all island residents in the established, and then segregated clubs, he founded a new club, On December 1st. 1950, the “De Musketiers”, dedicated to the principle of non-discrimination, thus making universal access possible for the first time.

It did not take long before fencing became well-established and benefited over the years from the contribution, successes, dedication, and devotion of some of its most famous practitioners: Jan Boutmy, Henry da Silva, Anton Jessurun and Michael Hellement. Their combined zeal and sense of purpose benefited fencing in the area over many years, and it is mostly due to the continuing efforts of these early fencers that fencing endures to this day in Curacao.

Over the years there were a few clubs with their perspective members practicing fencing. Since a few years, "De Musketiers" is the only club remaining on the island of Curacao. Nowadays, fencing has it’s up and downs. Although, still not well known on the island, the sport is continously striving to promote and create opportunities for the ones who wants to learn and practice the sport of fencing.
